Chapter II Walkthrough

From Misery Town through the epilogue saw choice — every major beat between Chapter I and Chapter III.

Last updated:

Chapter II bridges the Chapter I body-part recovery triangle (Green HillsCircus / Office / Timesville) and the Chapter III ending epilogue. Exploration opens Misery Town — the first full-game hub outside the pastoral Chapter I map — and culminates in the Saw Box choice that permanently locks Escape vs Return.

Keep the game on patch 1.08+ (Patch Notes). Patch 1.07 fixes Gambling Den NPC teleportation and dialogue-choice bugs that can affect late Chapter I / early Chapter II routing if you backtrack to Office content.

Full ending consequences: Endings Guide. Stay (Ending C) needs Area secrets during Chapter I reload — not during first Chapter II visit.

Entering Misery Town

After Chapter I body recovery, the story pushes into Misery Town — a decaying suburban landscape hiding Stay prerequisites:

  1. Finish the Chapter I elevator / train sequence from Green Hills
  2. Explore Misery Town at your own pace — non-linear like Chapter I
  3. Save at every wandering save point (Save System)

Misery Town hosts the cinema metal-detector secret required for Stay. You need the Metal Detector from Beartha’s Timesville chain — plan a Chapter I reload if you skipped it.

Optional Boss Encounters

Chapter II is when optional bosses become routing decisions for achievements and Stay:

BossFight achievementAvoid achievementStay requirement
TrapezistFatal PerformanceCut The ActMust fight on Stay run
ChameleonNo Strings AttachedCase ClosedMust fight on Stay run
AISystem OverrideShort CircuitMust fight on Stay run

On a dedicated Stay attempt, do not skip any optional boss — community guides and the Steam endings guide treat boss skips as Stay failures.

Saw Box — Code 471

Before the Chapter II epilogue, locate Henry’s computer and open PASSWORDS.TXT:

  • Saw Box code: 471
  • Opens the box containing Toy Saw & Real Saw
  • You may only carry one saw forward

Backup save (critical)

  1. Save at the nearest wandering point before opening the box
  2. Copy your Steam userdata folder if you want a hard backup (Save System)
  3. Cloud sync (1.04+) mirrors the single slot — external backup still recommended

The Roger Choice — Escape vs Return

At the Chapter II epilogue, give one saw to Roger:

Saw givenEndingSteam nameNext boss
Toy SawEscape (Family!)EscapeHenry Boss in Chapter III
Real SawReturn (Family?)ReturnAlternate Chapter III epilogue

This choice is irreversible for the current run. Your saw pick no longer matters for Stay once Escape and Return are both unlocked on prior runs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I open the Saw Box twice? A: No — you take one saw only. Reload a pre-box save to try the other branch.

Q: Do I need Misery Town secrets before the saw choice? A: Not for Escape/Return. Stay secrets are done on a separate Chapter I reload after unlocking both main endings.

Q: Which saw should I pick first? A: Toy Saw for Escape — the most common route and the one that leads to the Henry boss fight guide.
