Beartha

Timesville's yellow bear — recover her PGD, unlock the Metal Detector, and open Rosie's hidden chamber.

Last updated:

Beartha is a yellow bear NPC wandering Timesville. She reports a stolen PGD device and launches one of Chapter 1’s longest optional chains: Telescope constellation → beach shack → Metal DetectorLockpick → Rat’s room evidence → Nibbles blackmail → second beach dig → Black RoseRosie’s grave → VHS Player. Several Stay-ending prerequisites also pass through this route.

Start Beartha after you have the Telescope from Catthew’s aquarium/party chain. Without it, the locked beach shed puzzle cannot be solved.

Starting the Quest

Find Beartha in Timesville and ask about the crime she mentioned. She explains someone stole her PGD (Personal Guard Device — community shorthand keeps the in-game acronym). The quest does not advance until you open the locked shed beside the beach using the telescope star puzzle.

Area overview: Timesville · Green Hills.

Shed Puzzle — Telescope Constellation

  1. Place the Telescope near the locked shed before the beach
  2. Look through the scope and connect visible stars into a key-shaped constellation
  3. Enter the unlocked shed and follow the path downhill to the skeleton room

Patch 1.03 noted Beartha/PGD/shack telescope baseline visual bugs that often self-correct on re-entry (Patch Notes). Update to 1.05+ before long Stay runs — 1.05 fixed a shack softlock when leaving without the Metal Detector and re-entering near night.

Metal Detector Skeleton Puzzle

Underground you find multiple skeletons and a Metal Detector hanging from one of them.

  1. Raise every skeleton to its highest position except the upside-down one — its arms point straight outward
  2. Pull the bone rope fully to the right
  3. Wait for insects to cross the track and disappear
  4. Interact with the detector skeleton again, lower it, and collect the Metal Detector

The detector is a Stay (Ending C) gate item for Misery Town cinema and Timesville fish paper (Stay Secrets).

First Beach Dig — Lockpick

Equip the Metal Detector on the beach. When it beeps rapidly, press M1 to dig. The first major find is the Lockpick.

Use the Lockpick on the Rat’s room — apartment building, second floor, middle door on the right.

Rat’s Room — Evidence and Nibbles

Inside the Rat’s room:

  • Drink the water bottle for Water Break achievement progress (Achievements) — second of three sources
  • Spin the hamster wheel until a secret panel opens
  • Examine hidden evidence and Beartha’s photographs

Leave and confront Nibbles with the Blackmail dialogue option. He admits the PGD was buried on the beach.

Second Beach Dig — Camera, Fish Paper, PGD

Metal-detect the shoreline again. Community-confirmed dig order:

OrderItemNotes
1CameraSide collectible / evidence
2Fish PaperFinishing paper for Stay fish marathon — see Timesville Fishing
3PGDFar western edge of the beach

Return the PGD to Beartha for the Black Rose reward.

Switch to windowed mode if sandy-floor scans fail — consistent community workaround for detector minigames (Metal Detector).

Rosie Grave — VHS Player Chamber

Speak with the cow in Timesville — she wants to honor her late mother but lacks a suitable grave offering.

  1. Go to the cemetery
  2. Place the Black Rose on the grave marked Rosie
  3. Screen fades — crawl right continuously into a hidden chamber
  4. Collect the VHS Player — final major Chapter I objective tied to Beartha’s chain

Rosie’s memorial links emotionally to Beartha’s yellow-bear vignettes in the house beyond Catthew’s bridge — both characters anchor Timesville’s softer horror beats before later VHS/chase content.

Optional — Transparent Mug Brawl

If you carry the Transparent Mug from The Office Gambling Den, the party room on the apartment second floor can trigger an optional brawl mini-game. Unrelated to PGD completion but worth noting on a 100% sweep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I do Beartha before Catthew? A: You need the Telescope from Catthew’s chain to open the shack. Eyes recovery and fishing license can happen in parallel, but the shed stays locked without the scope.

Q: Where exactly is the PGD buried? A: The far west edge of the Timesville beach — after Nibbles blackmail and the second metal-detector pass.

Q: Is Beartha required for any ending? A: Not for Escape/Return directly. The Metal Detector and 18-fish chain she unlocks are mandatory for Stay.

Beartha calls it her PGD device in-game — guides treat it as a stolen personal guard gadget, not a spelled-out lore acronym.

How do I blackmail Nibbles?

What is the Black Rose for?

Place it on Rosie's grave in the cemetery to access the hidden chamber with the VHS Player.
